-
(I do not think George was 18 when he enlisted. He may have lied about his age or it may be a typographical
-
error in the records. George W. Weller was born in 3-1-1821 and died April 12, 1864, allegedly of wounds
-
or illness resulting from service in the Civil War. His son George Weller was born in 1860, and there is no
-
record of any other George Weller in Victory or even Cayuga County. He shows up in the censuses for Victory,
-
NY in 1850 and 1860. His wife Julia A. Weller shows up in the earlier censuses and in the 1865 NY State
-
Census as a widow. Julia A. Weller filed a pension application as George W. Weller's widow in May 1864.
-
There is no doubt this George W. Weller served in the Civil War. My cousin has his original journal including
-
writings on the war and slavery and some letters apparently written while in prison. He was a staunch abolitionist.
-
I doubt there would be two George W. Wellers from Victory, NY serving and becoming disabled in the Civil War.)
